What triggers mesothelioma?
Like all cancers, mesothelioma is triggered when a cell within the body begins dividing uncontrollably, making copies of itself that eventually grow into a tumor. In the case of mesothelioma, this process is typically caused by asbestos. However, there are many factors, some of which are unknown, that determine when and whether this process will begin.
Healthy cells in a creature’s body are programmed to play a certain role, and to reproduce only when it benefits the organism for them to do so. They initiate their own death when they’re no longer needed. In cancer, mutations build up within the DNA of a cell that override this program and cause it to begin multiplying rapidly. While our genetics have safeguards that prevent this (for instance, by killing cells that have accumulated too much damage), not all people’s genetics do this equally effectively.
What triggers mesothelioma?
Asbestos has been shown over decades to be particularly adept at causing the cell damage that triggers cancer. Jagged microscopic fibers of the mineral are inhaled and travel through the body, eventually embedding themselves in the mesothelium (lining of the lungs and abdominal organs). Over the course of years and decades, they trigger reactions that damage cells. It takes a long time for this to occur to the point where a cell becomes cancerous. However, once it begins, the cancerous mass can grow rapidly.
Only about 1 or 2 in every 10 people with significant asbestos exposure will develop mesothelioma. Genetic factors likely play a role in protecting some people from the harmful effects of asbestos. Further complicating factors, some cases of the disease are idiopathic—they have no known association with any carcinogen.
