What is the prognosis of mesothelioma?

When a person is diagnosed with mesothelioma, there are multiple factors that go into determining their prognosis. At one extreme, mesothelioma that is in stage 4 or has spread to distant areas of the body (such as the brain or liver) is usually considered terminal, and patients may have less than a year to live. At the other extreme, doctors may begin aggressive treatment with the hope of achieving full or partial remission.

Perhaps the most important factor in determining a mesothelioma patient's prognosis is the stage at which the disease is caught. Cancers are often classified in stages from 1 to 4; at stage 1, a tumor remains localized to the spot where it originated, in stage 2 it has spread to the lymph nodes and surrounding tissues, in stage 3 it has spread throughout an area of the body, and in stage 4, it has invaded distant areas. Mesothelioma is difficult to catch in stages 1 and 2 because the symptoms are so mild at that point.  According to the National Cancer Institute, mesothelioma has a 5-yuear survival rate of 9%. That amount is 19% if it is caught in stage 1, 5% if it progresses to stage 4.

Another factor is age. Younger people have better survival rates; since they are likely to be in better overall health and thus better candidates for surgery and aggressive treatment, this may further improve their prognosis. Women have higher survival rates than men.
A person's doctor is the best source for information on their prognosis. But even with excellent medical care, no prediction can be completely accurate.
