What is the Life Expectancy of a Person with Mesothelioma?

What is the life expectancy of a person with mesothelioma?

In 1982, the elite biologist Stephen Jay Gould was diagnosed with mesothelioma. Consulting the medical literature, he was stunned to find a reported median survival time of only 8 months.  Using his statistical training, Gould realized that figure didn’t mean he would necessarily die in 8 months. Rather, with a median of 8 months, “the upper .. half can extend out for years and years, even if nobody ultimately survives…. The distribution was indeed, strongly right skewed, with a long tail (however small) that extended for several years above the eight month median.”

What is the life expectancy of a person with mesothelioma?

Gould’s analysis showed that average survival times can’t accurately predict the life expectancy of someone who’s been diagnosed with mesothelioma. (He went on to live 20 years). A more accurate estimate of life expectancy can be given by a doctor and will take into account age, gender, overall health and at what stage the disease was caught.
• Today, Asbestos.org reports that average life expectance is from 12 to 21 months. They further specify that “Patients with stage 1 or 2 pleural mesothelioma have an average life expectancy of 19 to 21 months…Patients with stage 3 or 4 pleural mesothelioma have an average life expectancy of up to 16 months, and “Patients with peritoneal mesothelioma who receive surgical treatment often have life expectancies greater than 5 years.”
While average figures are well known, there is no clear-cut upper limit for life expectancy, especially for a person in relatively good health whose cancer is caught early.
