What happens in the final stages of mesothelioma?

A cancer is typically considered to have reached its final stages when it has spread to parts of the body other than the place it originated, and advanced too far to be aggressively treated through surgery and other methods. This form of cancer is aggressive and spreads quickly, so in some cases it can develop to this point within a year or less after diagnosis.
Mesothelioma usually starts in the lining of the lungs or abdominal cavity. After that, cancerous cells spread through the blood and lymph, spreading first in the lungs, stomach, intestines, liver and other organs within the abdomen. In stage 4 mesothelioma, they may have spread far through the body to places such as the brain.

By the final stages, these tumors may be large enough to severely interfere with organs and cause abdominal pain, shortness of breath, chest pain and tightness, fever, night sweats, severe weight loss, fatigue, coughing up blood and general malaise.
If they have spread to other organs, they may cause symptoms there, too; for instance, a brain tumor can cause headaches.

In stage 4, surgery may not be an option since attempting to remove tumors could irreparably damage blood vessels or organs. Or surgery may be attempted, but only to reduce tumor volume so the patient’s symptoms can abate., Chemotherapy and radiation may also be unable to arrest the progress of the disease. But its symptoms, while potentially severe, can be managed through palliative care.

Final-stage mesothelioma can become fatal when it causes failure of a major organ such as the heart or lungs. Until that time, the patient’s pain is typically managed through strong opioids such as codeine.
