What are testicular and pericardial mesothelioma

Mesothelioma is a rare cancer, with about 3,000 cases diagnosed in the US each year. Among those, most involve the lining (mesothelium) of the lungs or abdomen. Two other forms of the disease are even rarer: mesothelioma of the testicles and lining of the heart (pericardium). These forms of cancer differ in their prognoses, but both are difficult to diagnose and treat.

Testicular mesothelioma is extremely rare, with only about 250 cases having been documented since the condition was discovered in the 1950s. It is not clear how asbestos could cause a primary tumor to form on the testicles, and some cases are not associated with any known carcinogen.  A common symptom is fluid buildup around the testicles, but this condition can easily be mistaken for other issues such as a hernia. Surgery is a common treatment; this form of mesothelioma has the best prognosis, with about half of patients surviving past the 5-year mark.

What are testicular and pericardial mesothelioma

Pericardial mesothelioma affects the membrane surrounding the heart. It accounts for only 1% of mesothelioma cases, and only 150 such cases are described in medical literature. About a quarter of those diagnosed have been exposed to asbestos. With the disease being so rare, it’s not clear how it’s caused—how asbestos fibers that are inhaled or swallowed could reach the heart, and alternately, what causes it in cases not associated with asbestos.

This form of cancer is highly aggressive, and only about half of those diagnosed survive past 6 months. Its symptoms, including fatigue and chest pain, can mimic those of common diseases, making it difficult to diagnose. Most cases are caught only in an autopsy; however, when it is caught early, patients can be treated with chemotherapy, tumor removal surgery and other standard treatments.
