Mesothelioma Prognosis
The prognosis for people who have mesothelioma is generally not very good. While treatments have gotten better in the past decade or so, it’s still a very difficult disease to treat, and there is no known “cure” for the disease.  There are ways to treat the disease and to improve life expectancy and quality of life, but mesothelioma is often diagnosed only once it is already in the later stages. There are a number of factors that affect the likely prognosis of mesothelioma.  These factors include things like location of the cancer, cell type, stage, metastasis, and overall health.

Location
Mesothelioma in the abdomen, peritoneal mesothelioma, has a better prognosis than mesothelioma in the lungs, pleural mesothelioma. Mesothelioma in the heart, pericardial mesothelioma, has a very poor prognosis.

Cell Type
The 3 primary cell types of mesothelioma are epithelioid cells, sacromatoid cells, and biphasic cells. Epithelioid cells are the most common type of cell in mesothelioma, and patients diagnosed with this type has a much better prognosis than people with the other types of mesothelioma cells. Sacromatoid cells spread very quickly and are the least common type of cell. There are less treatment options available for this type of mesothelioma, which then decreases life-expectancy. Biphasic is when both of the above mentioned cells are present, and the prognosis is not as good as if only epithelioid cells are present.  If there are more epithelioid cells than sacromatoid cells, that is better than if there are more sacromatoid cells.

Stage
Unsurprisingly, patients who are diagnosed with mesothelioma at one of the earlier stages have a better prognosis than those who are diagnosed after they have already had the disease for a long period of time. Once patients reach stage III and IV, treatment options generally aren’t available and the only thing that can be done is to alleviate symptoms and try to make patients more comfortable.

Metastasis
If the cancer has spread to other parts of the body (metastasized), it is much more difficult to treat than if it is in one place. When the cancer is in one place, it could be possible to remove the cancer surgically or to kill it with chemotherapy. Once it metastasizes, this becomes increasingly difficult.

Overall Health
The younger and healthier a patient is, the more likely that they will have a better prognosis.  Their bodies are better able to handle the treatments.  Older patients and patients who are not in good health otherwise may have other conditions that can exacerbate the mesothelioma and make it even more difficult to treat than it normally would be.

Generally speaking, the prognosis for mesothelioma patients is poor.  Treatment options are getting better as time goes on and more research and experimental treatments are done, but it seems that we are far away from finding any type of actual cure for the disease.
