Can Mesothelioma Be Treated?
While mesothelioma is challenging to treat, forms of treatment do exist that have been shown by the evidence to increase lifespan and improve the patient’s comfort.
Chemotherapy is a standard part of care for mesothelioma patient. Chemotherapy drugs kill cancer cells, but because they target all fast-growing cells in the body, they have severe side effects. Alimta and Cisplatin are the two drugs most commonly used for this form of cancer. By itself, chemo is not highly effective; only 19% of patients treated with chemo alone are alive after 2 years. The drugs can also be applied as a heated wash inside the body after surgery (hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy, or HIPEC), for greater effects.
Can Mesothelioma Be Treated?
Radiation therapy involves aiming a high energy beam (such as an x-ray) at a targeted area to kill the cancer cells. This form of treatment is less effective when tumors do not present as a single distinct mass; this is often the case in mesothelioma, making radiation less effective in some cases.
Surgery is a standard treatment in cases where tumors haven’t become so large that removing them would inflict too much damage on major organs. It can be combined with other methods to remove cancerous cells left over after surgery. These treatments can be performed with the aim of curing the cancer, or to provide palliative effects and reduce symptoms; in both cases, they are proven effective.
