Can Mesothelioma be cured if caught early?

It’s rare for mesothelioma to be caught early. The disease develops quickly, and its symptoms can be mistaken for common aches and pains that aren’t a big deal. Still, it is sometimes caught early, and can be treated aggressively and sometimes driven into remission when it is.

In the case of pleural mesothelioma, the cancer begins with what’s known as stage 1A, when tiny tumors grow in the lining of one lung. Stage 1B occurs when the cancer spreads to other tissues immediately nearby, such as lung or adjoining muscle tissue. In stage 1, patients may be good candidates for surgery to remove the tumors, as well as for chemotherapy and radiation. The 2-year survival rate is 41 to 46%.

In stage 2 mesothelioma, cancer cells enter the lymph nodes. Tumors remain small enough to be removed through surgery. This potentially increases life expectancy, but median life expectancy is only 20 months even with surgery.

Mesothelioma caught at stage one has a 13 to 16% 5-year survival rate. (While this official system of stages does not exist for peritoneal and other rare types of mesothelioma, the progression of the disease is the same.)

While a doctor of an early-stage mesothelioma patient may speculate about their prognosis, it’s difficult to predict for certain. A small percentage of mesothelioma patients go into remission and can live for 10, 15 or more after diagnosis.
