Can Mesothelioma be caused by anything other than asbestos?
Mesothelioma is strongly linked to asbestos. Still, about 20% of cases occur in people who haven’t been exposed to the mineral. This suggests that there are other causes of this form of rare cancer.
One likely cause is radiation used in medical contexts. One scientific paper reports that “cases of MM of the pleura, peritoneum, and pericardium have been reported in humans after therapeutic irradiation and thorium dioxide administration.” The paper cites exposure to thorium dioxide, a contrast medium used to make body structures more visible in an x-ray; exposure to radiation to treat various cancers; and working in atomic energy. Studies have shown these types of exposure to increase risk of mesothelioma, with the latency period lasting up to 50 years, as with asbestos exposure.

It has also been speculated that exposure to certain types of virus could cause the cancer. Other types of fibrous mineral, such as eriolite and fluoro-edenite, have been associated with the disease; such cases are rare because these minerals are not used commercially.
The paper makes clear that “All of these alternative etiologies account for a small proportion of tumors, and most mesotheliomas not clearly attributable to asbestos exposure are spontaneous (idiopathic). “In other words, for most cases where asbestos was not a factor, the cause is not known. By contrast, only 10 to 20% of people with known asbestos exposure develop mesothelioma. This suggests that the risk factors and protective factors are not fully known.
